What are Flexible Dentures

Flexible dentures are a removable dental option crafted from a softer, more pliable material than conventional dentures. This flexibility allows them to fit more comfortably in the mouth. Unlike conventional dentures, which can be rigid and sometimes uncomfortable, flexible denture options adapt to the shape of your gums and teeth, reducing the risk of sore spots and irritation.

Flexible partial dentures are specifically designed to replace one or more missing teeth, offering a more natural look and feel. These dentures use flexible resin materials that make them less likely to break or crack compared to traditional acrylic dentures. Flexible partial denture options often include clear or gum-colored clasps that blend smoothly with your natural teeth and gums.

Advantages

Why and When Are Flexible Dentures Used?

Flexible denture solutions are used for several reasons and in various situations. They are often chosen for their comfort and ability to adapt to the mouth's natural contours. Flexible dentures are particularly useful for individuals who have difficulty with the rigidity of traditional dentures.
Here are just a few examples when they are used:

Ideal for individuals who have lost all their teeth in the upper or lower arch, full upper flexible dentures provide a more comfortable fit compared to traditional options.

These are used when only some teeth are missing. They fit precisely with natural teeth and are less likely to cause discomfort.

Specifically designed to replace missing front teeth.

Who is suitable for flexible dentures:

Those who experience irritation or allergies with traditional denture materials.

Flexible dentures are durable and less likely to break, making them suitable for active individuals.

Anyone looking for a more natural look and feel, as flexible dentures blend well with natural teeth and gums.

Flexible dentures are a highly versatile and comfortable option for many patients, providing both functional and cosmetic benefits.

Types

Types of Flexible Dentures

All-on-4 implant dentures, also known as full-arch implant dentures, offer a complete restoration for patients who have lost all or most of their teeth in an arch. This innovative treatment concept involves the strategic placement of four dental implants per arch. These implants serve as anchors to support a full arch of prosthetic teeth. The All-on-4 technique maximizes the use of available bone, often eliminating the need for bone grafting. It provides stability, functionality, and aesthetics, allowing patients to enjoy a secure and natural-looking smile.

All-On-4 Implant Dentures

Implant-supported overdentures are removable dentures that are securely attached to dental implants. These dentures offer improved stability compared to conventional removable dentures. Typically, two to four dental implants are strategically placed in the jawbone, and the overdenture is designed to clip onto these implants. This design provides enhanced support and retention, preventing slippage or movement of the denture during speaking or chewing. Implant-supported overdentures offer a balance between stability and convenience, allowing for easy removal and cleaning.

Implant-Supported Overdentures

Fixed implant dentures, also known as fixed implant bridges or hybrid dentures, are permanently fixed in the mouth and function similarly to natural teeth. This type of implant denture is supported by multiple dental implants, typically four to six or more per arch, providing exceptional stability and chewing efficiency. Fixed implant dentures are designed to closely resemble natural teeth and gums, offering a highly aesthetic and functional restoration. They are custom-made to fit precisely in the mouth, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit. Fixed implant dentures provide the closest experience to natural teeth, offering patients the ability to eat a wide range of foods with confidence.

Valplast dentures are made from a nylon-based material that is both flexible and durable. These dentures blend smoothly with your natural gums, offering a highly aesthetic solution. They are also lightweight and comfortable, adapting well to the shape of your mouth, which reduces irritation.

Flexite dentures are another good choice. Made from a flexible resin material, Flexite dentures are strong and resistant to breakage. They provide a comfortable and accurate fit and can be easily adjusted if necessary.

By choosing Dr. Edward Doktorman, you gain access to these high-quality denture options, along with expert care. Dr. Doktorman’s experience ensures that you receive the best possible treatment, resulting in a natural-looking smile and better oral function.

Disadvantages of Flexible Dentures

While flexible dentures offer many benefits, there are also some disadvantages to consider:

Flexible dentures often come at a higher cost than traditional dentures because of the specialized materials and custom fabrication involved.

The materials used in flexible partial dentures for front teeth can be more prone to staining from foods and drinks, requiring careful cleaning.

Although they are less likely to break, flexible denture teeth may wear down more quickly than those made from more rigid materials.

Flexible partial dentures might not provide as much support as traditional dentures, which can affect chewing efficiency and comfort.

Making adjustments to flexible dentures can be more challenging than with rigid dentures, potentially requiring more frequent visits to the dentist.

Understanding these flexible dentures disadvantages can help you make a more informed decision.

Procedure Details for Flexible Dentures

The procedure for obtaining flexible dentures involves several key steps:

At your first appointment, the dentist in Clifton will evaluate your oral health, talk through your needs, and decide if flexible dentures are the right option for you. This process involves examining the state of your gums and any remaining teeth.

The dentist will take precise molds of your mouth to craft custom-fit dentures, such as flexible dentures full set or a flexible lower partial denture.

The impressions are sent to a dental lab where the flexible dentures are crafted using soft, flexible materials. This process usually takes a few weeks.

After the dentures are prepared, the dentist will place them in your mouth and make any needed adjustments for a proper fit.

After installation, it’s normal to experience some initial discomfort as your mouth adjusts to the new dentures. Follow-up appointments may be needed to make further adjustments.

Understanding this process helps ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

What you need

Flexible Denture Care

Caring for your flexible dentures is crucial to ensure their longevity and maintain oral health. Here are some basic rules for oral care after denture placement:

Gently clean your dentures each day with a soft-bristled brush and a denture-specific cleaner. Steer clear of regular toothpaste, as it can be too abrasive for the flexible material of your dentures.

Rinse your dentures with water after meals to remove food particles and prevent staining.

Carefully brush your teeth twice a day.

Schedule regular visits with your dentist for check-ups and professional cleanings. These appointments allow your dentist to confirm that your dentures fit properly and to make any adjustments as needed.

By following these simple care tips, you can keep your flexible dentures in good condition.

Doctor Edward Doktorman luckily for me, has been my Dentist of choice for so many years. I have done multiple implants, root canals, bone graft, new posts and crowns, deep cleaning, filling, recementing, and other dental procedures in this office, and never had any issues afterwards. Dr. Edward and his staff are also great people on the personal level, very accommodating, very friendly, nice, helpful, go out of their ways to make the patient feel comfortable, and always smiling and joking with patients to lessen the stress of being at the dentist office. The Doctor always takes X-rays much more often than other dentists do before and after procedures (at no add’l cost to the patient) to make sure his work is done perfectly and satisfactorily. He always takes his time to explain in details what the diagnosis is and what needs to be done in an easy to understand language. You are no doubt in good hands with Doktorman.

From phone, to door, to chair, back to the door, this was a very positive experience. I put off a root canal for way too long. Don’t do that, by the way. Anyway, I ended up with a very angry abscess, went to one of those online doctors for $65 and got antibiotics and a dental rinse, and as soon as the swelling was sufficiently down, I decided to just have the tooth yanked. Back molar, not going to miss it too much, a lot cheaper than even going to Los Algones Mexico for a root canal which honestly these days makes a lot more sense than having it done for the higher price (even when factoring in air fare and hotel for dental tourism to Mexico) here in the States. In any case, everyone, and I mean everyone at this office is so friendly and polite and professional and efficient. It just so happened, and I certainly can’t guarantee this nor could this dentist, but I ended up being charged slightly less than the estimate they gave me. Even had it been the top and of the estimate, it’s still would have been a good deal. I would add that I am not a fan of Novocaine at all, and have had dental work done before without the shot because the regular pain I can handle, but I’m a baby about the Novocaine shot. This time I didn’t want to mess around since I was having a tooth pulled, but the dentist gave a fantastic shot and the entire procedure he did an excellent job. The healing process has been going very well with the exception of a bit of sharp bone sticking out the inner side of my gum (according to Google, this is not abnormal after a tooth extraction) and attacking my tongue on that side. I let them know about this today which is a Monday. I’m not scheduled to be back to have the stitches out until Thursday, but they told me that they would fit me in tomorrow. So let’s review: everyone in that office is friendly, professional, responsive, accommodating and efficient, the pricing is very gentle, and the dentist himself Dr. Doktorman does excellent work. So if you’re anywhere in reasonable commute distance and in need of a dentist, this seems like a pretty obvious choice. Going to a dentist is not recreational, but seriously, you’re going to be happy with them here.
