What Are Emergency Dentistry?

When faced with a dental emergency, you can rely on Dr.Edward Doktorman in Clifton, NJ to provide the immediate and expert care you need. Our team of highly skilled dentists is committed to delivering prompt and effective treatment to alleviate pain, address dental trauma, and restore your oral health.

Dental emergencies are situations that require urgent attention due to severe pain, trauma, or sudden onset of symptoms that affect the teeth, gums, or oral cavity. Our emergency dentists are trained to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, offering timely relief, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.

Our team is equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, and tools to address urgent dental issues promptly. They understand the importance of prompt intervention to alleviate pain, control bleeding, prevent further damage, and preserve oral health. Whether it’s a severe toothache, a broken tooth, or a dental infection, our emergency dentist is there to provide immediate care and ensure that the patient’s oral health and well-being are prioritized.

Importance

Importance Of Emergency Dental Care

Emergency dental care is of paramount importance as it addresses urgent oral health issues and provides immediate relief to patients in distress. Here are some key reasons why emergency dental care is crucial:

Dental emergencies often involve severe pain, which can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. Emergency dental care aims to alleviate pain and discomfort promptly, providing relief and improving the patient’s well-being.

Dental emergencies, if left untreated, can worsen and lead to more significant oral health issues. Prompt intervention by our emergency specialist can prevent further damage, such as infection spread, tooth loss, or extensive dental procedures in the future.

Timely emergency dental care helps preserve the integrity and health of the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues. By addressing dental emergencies promptly, we can assess the situation, provide appropriate treatment, and prevent complications that could arise from delayed care.

Dental emergencies often involve traumatic injuries to the teeth, jaw, or soft tissues of the mouth. Emergency dental care focuses on managing trauma effectively, reducing the risk of complications, and promoting healing.

In some cases, dental emergencies can be averted through early intervention. Regular dental check-ups and preventive care allow us to identify and address potential issues before they escalate into emergencies. Emergency dental care also provides an opportunity to educate patients about preventive measures and oral hygiene practices to minimize future emergencies.

When To Seek Emergency Dental Treatment

It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms that indicate the need for emergency dental treatment. While not all dental issues require immediate attention, certain situations warrant prompt care. Here are some examples of when to seek emergency dental treatment:

Intense and persistent toothache that is accompanied by swelling or fever may indicate an infection or abscess that requires immediate treatment.

Any injury to the teeth, gums, or jaws, such as a knocked-out tooth, a fractured tooth, or significant soft tissue damage, should be addressed urgently by our emergency doctor.

If there is uncontrolled bleeding in the oral cavity, such as after dental surgery or due to an injury, it is crucial to seek emergency dental care to stop the bleeding and prevent further complications.

If a dental crown, bridge, or filling becomes loose or dislodged, it may cause discomfort or leave the affected tooth vulnerable to damage or infection. Emergency dental care can help stabilize the restoration and prevent further issues.

Symptoms of a severe dental infection, such as swelling, pus discharge, or fever, require immediate attention to prevent the infection from spreading and causing further complications.

Facial swelling that occurs suddenly and is accompanied by pain may indicate a serious underlying dental issue, such as an abscess or infection.

It’s important to note that the above examples are not exhaustive, and individual circumstances may vary. If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies as a dental emergency, it is best to contact our emergency dentist or a dental helpline for guidance.

What you need

What To Do In A Dental Emergency

Experiencing a dental emergency can be stressful, but knowing what steps to take can make a significant difference in preserving your oral health and reducing discomfort. Here are the key actions to take in a dental emergency:

  1. Stay Calm: It’s important to stay calm and assess the situation calmly. Panicking can make it difficult to think clearly and take appropriate action.
  2. Control Bleeding: If there is bleeding, gently rinse your mouth with warm water and apply gentle pressure to the affected area using a clean cloth or gauze pad. Maintain steady pressure until the bleeding subsides.
  3. Manage Pain and Swelling: To reduce pain and swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack on the outside of your cheek, near the affected area. This can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling.
  4. Preserve a Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth is knocked out, handle it carefully by the crown (top part) and avoid touching the root. Rinse the tooth gently with water to remove dirt or debris. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into its socket, making sure it is facing the right way. If reinsertion is not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or a tooth preservation solution.
  5. Protect Fractured or Broken Teeth: If a tooth is fractured or broken, rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. If there are sharp edges, cover them with dental wax or sugarless gum to protect your tongue and cheeks from injury.
  1. Seek Professional Help: Contact our emergency dentist immediately to explain the situation and schedule an emergency appointment. Just as many, our dental practice has specific slots for emergencies, so we can accommodate you as soon as possible. If it’s after-hours or on the weekend, follow the instructions on our voicemail or website.
  2. Provide Relevant Information: When contacting, provide detailed information about the dental emergency, including the nature of the problem, any pain or swelling, and any specific symptoms you are experiencing. This will help us prepare for your visit and provide appropriate treatment.
  1. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: If you are experiencing pain, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Follow the instructions and recommended dosage on the packaging, and do not exceed the recommended limits.
  2. Saltwater Rinse: A warm saltwater rinse can help alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth gently for about 30 seconds before spitting it out.
  3. Avoid Heat or Cold Sensitivity: If you have a toothache or sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, avoid consuming food or beverages that are extremely hot or cold. Stick to lukewarm or room temperature items to prevent aggravating the sensitivity.
  4. Remember, these steps are intended to provide temporary relief and should not replace professional dental care. It’s crucial to contact us promptly for proper evaluation and treatment.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk and prevent potential dental emergencies. By adopting good oral hygiene practices, attending regular dental check-ups with your trusted dentist in Clifton, using protective equipment, and avoiding harmful habits, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of dental emergencies. Let’s explore these preventive measures in detail.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the foundation for preventing dental emergencies. Here are some essential oral hygiene practices:

  • Brushing Twice a Day: Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brushing removes plaque, bacteria, and food particles from the teeth and gums, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Flossing Daily: Flossing once a day helps remove plaque and debris from between the teeth and along the gumline, where a toothbrush cannot reach effectively. It helps prevent cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues.
  • Using Mouthwash: Rinse your mouth with an antimicrobial mouthwash after brushing and flossing. Mouthwash helps kill bacteria and freshens your breath.
  • Limiting Sugary Foods and Drinks: Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks, as they contribute to tooth decay. Opt for healthier alternatives like fruits, vegetables, and water.

Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings play a crucial role in preventing dental emergencies. Here’s why:

  • Professional Cleanings: Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Regular cleanings help maintain optimal oral health and prevent potential emergencies.
  • Early Detection of Issues: Regular dental check-ups allow us to detect and address dental issues early on. This includes identifying cavities, gum disease, and other concerns that, if left untreated, could progress to dental emergencies.
  • X-rays and Oral Exams: Dental x-rays and comprehensive oral exams help identify hidden dental problems, such as impacted teeth, cysts, or tumors. Early detection can prevent future emergencies and ensure timely intervention.

If you participate in sports activities or recreational pursuits, wearing a mouthguard is crucial for protecting your teeth and preventing dental emergencies. Mouthguards are custom-fitted devices that cushion the teeth and jaws, reducing the risk of tooth fractures, lip lacerations, and other oral injuries. Consult with us to get a properly fitting mouthguard that suits your needs.

Certain habits and practices can increase the risk of dental emergencies. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Using Teeth as Tools: Avoid using your teeth as tools to open bottles, tear packages, or bite nails. Using your teeth for non-dental purposes can lead to chipping or fractures.
  • Chewing Ice or Hard Objects: Chewing on ice, pens, or other hard objects can cause tooth fractures or damage to dental restorations. Avoid these habits to prevent dental emergencies.
  • Grinding and Clenching Teeth: Teeth grinding or clenching, known as bruxism, can lead to tooth fractures, worn-down enamel, and jaw pain. If you grind your teeth, discuss it with our specialist who may recommend a custom night guard to protect your teeth.
  • Smoking and Tobacco Use: Smoking and tobacco use increase the risk of oral cancer, gum disease, tooth loss, and other dental emergencies. Quitting or avoiding tobacco products contributes to better oral health.

By adopting these preventive measures, you can minimize the risk of dental emergencies and maintain optimal oral health. Remember, regular dental care and consulting with your dentist are essential in developing a personalized preventive plan based on your unique needs and lifestyle.

Doctor Edward Doktorman luckily for me, has been my Dentist of choice for so many years. I have done multiple implants, root canals, bone graft, new posts and crowns, deep cleaning, filling, recementing, and other dental procedures in this office, and never had any issues afterwards. Dr. Edward and his staff are also great people on the personal level, very accommodating, very friendly, nice, helpful, go out of their ways to make the patient feel comfortable, and always smiling and joking with patients to lessen the stress of being at the dentist office. The Doctor always takes X-rays much more often than other dentists do before and after procedures (at no add’l cost to the patient) to make sure his work is done perfectly and satisfactorily. He always takes his time to explain in details what the diagnosis is and what needs to be done in an easy to understand language. You are no doubt in good hands with Doktorman.

From phone, to door, to chair, back to the door, this was a very positive experience. I put off a root canal for way too long. Don’t do that, by the way. Anyway, I ended up with a very angry abscess, went to one of those online doctors for $65 and got antibiotics and a dental rinse, and as soon as the swelling was sufficiently down, I decided to just have the tooth yanked. Back molar, not going to miss it too much, a lot cheaper than even going to Los Algones Mexico for a root canal which honestly these days makes a lot more sense than having it done for the higher price (even when factoring in air fare and hotel for dental tourism to Mexico) here in the States. In any case, everyone, and I mean everyone at this office is so friendly and polite and professional and efficient. It just so happened, and I certainly can’t guarantee this nor could this dentist, but I ended up being charged slightly less than the estimate they gave me. Even had it been the top and of the estimate, it’s still would have been a good deal. I would add that I am not a fan of Novocaine at all, and have had dental work done before without the shot because the regular pain I can handle, but I’m a baby about the Novocaine shot. This time I didn’t want to mess around since I was having a tooth pulled, but the dentist gave a fantastic shot and the entire procedure he did an excellent job. The healing process has been going very well with the exception of a bit of sharp bone sticking out the inner side of my gum (according to Google, this is not abnormal after a tooth extraction) and attacking my tongue on that side. I let them know about this today which is a Monday. I’m not scheduled to be back to have the stitches out until Thursday, but they told me that they would fit me in tomorrow. So let’s review: everyone in that office is friendly, professional, responsive, accommodating and efficient, the pricing is very gentle, and the dentist himself Dr. Doktorman does excellent work. So if you’re anywhere in reasonable commute distance and in need of a dentist, this seems like a pretty obvious choice. Going to a dentist is not recreational, but seriously, you’re going to be happy with them here.

FAQs About Emergency Dentistry

Emergency dentists specialize in treating conditions that require immediate attention, offering services outside of normal business hours to address acute dental issues. Regular dentists provide a wide range of dental care services, focusing on long-term oral health, preventive care, and scheduled treatments. While many regular dentists can handle dental emergencies, emergency dentists are more equipped for immediate, urgent care situations.

Yes, a knocked-out tooth can often be saved if you act quickly. Handle the tooth by the crown (the part that is visible when in the mouth), rinse it with milk or water if it’s dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or in your mouth next to your cheek and seek emergency dental care immediately. The sooner you see a dentist, the better the chances of saving the tooth.

The cost of emergency dental care can vary widely depending on the type of treatment required. Simple procedures like dental fillings or prescribing medication may cost less, while more complex treatments like root canals or extractions will be more expensive. Many dental insurance plans offer coverage for emergency care, but it’s important to check with your provider for details.
