What Are Dental implants?

Dental implants have revolutionized the field of dentistry by providing a permanent and reliable solution for replacing missing teeth. Whether you have lost a single tooth or multiple teeth, dental implants offer a natural-looking and functional alternative to restore your smile. At Dr.Edward Doktorman, we are proud to offer dental implant services in Clifton, NJ, using the latest techniques and advanced technology.

A dental implant consists of three main components: the implant fixture, the abutment, and the dental crown. The implant fixture is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. The abutment is attached to the implant fixture and serves as a connector between the implant and the dental crown. The dental crown is the visible part of the implant that resembles a natural tooth and is custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your existing teeth.

Advantages

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous benefits that make them a popular choice for tooth replacement. Some of the key advantages include:

Dental implants are designed to look and feel like natural teeth, providing a seamless and attractive smile. The customized dental crown blends seamlessly with your existing teeth, enhancing your overall appearance.

Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants are firmly anchored in the jawbone, offering stability and durability. This allows you to eat, speak, and chew with confidence, as dental implants provide the same strength and functionality as natural teeth.

When a tooth is lost, the underlying jawbone can begin to deteriorate over time. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss and preserving its density and strength. This helps maintain the overall facial structure and prevents a sunken or aged appearance.

With proper care and maintenance, dental implants have a high success rate and can last a lifetime. They are a long-term investment in your oral health and provide a permanent solution for tooth replacement.

How Dental Implants Work

The process of getting dental implants typically involves multiple stages and requires collaboration between the dentist and oral surgeon. Here is a general overview of how dental implants work:

During the initial consultation, the dentist will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. X-rays or CT scans may be taken to assess the condition of your jawbone.

In a surgical procedure, the dental implant fixture is placed into the jawbone. The implant is made of biocompatible titanium, which allows it to fuse with the jawbone over time through a process called osseointegration. This provides a strong and stable foundation for the dental crown.

After implant placement, a healing period of several months is typically required to allow the implant to integrate with the jawbone. During this time, a temporary crown may be placed to maintain aesthetics and functionality.

Once the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone, a small connector called the abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment protrudes above the gumline and acts as a support for the dental crown.

The final step involves the fabrication and placement of the dental crown. The crown is custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth. It is securely attached to the abutment, completing the dental implant restoration.

Dental implants provide a reliable and long-lasting solution for missing teeth, improving both oral health and quality of life. If you are considering dental implants, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with our experienced dental team at Dr.Edward Doktorman in Clifton, NJ. We will assess your unique needs, answer any questions you may have, and create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve a healthy and beautiful smile.

What you need

Candidacy For Dental Implants

Dental implants are a versatile tooth replacement option, suitable for many individuals who have lost one or more teeth. However, not everyone may be an immediate candidate for dental implants. Factors such as overall health, oral health, bone density, and the presence of gum disease can influence candidacy. A comprehensive evaluation by a dental professional is necessary to determine if dental implants are the right solution for you.

Ideal candidates for dental implants generally have:

Candidates should have a healthy mouth, free from active gum disease or tooth decay. It is essential to address any underlying oral health issues before proceeding with dental implant placement.

Sufficient bone density in the jaw is crucial for successful implant placement. If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting procedures may be recommended to augment the jawbone and create a suitable foundation for the implants.

General health plays a role in the success of dental implant procedures. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune diseases, or certain medications may affect the healing process and implant integration.

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential for the long-term success of dental implants. Candidates should be committed to regular dental visits, brushing, flossing, and following the dentist’s instructions for implant care.

Smoking can negatively impact the success of dental implants. Tobacco use can impair healing and increase the risk of complications. It is advisable to quit smoking before undergoing dental implant treatment.

It’s important to note that even if you don’t initially meet all the criteria for dental implant candidacy, there may still be solutions available. Advanced techniques, such as bone grafting or sinus lift procedures, can help prepare the jaw for implant placement and expand the pool of eligible candidates.

Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure is a multi-stage process that involves careful planning, precise placement of the implant, and a period of healing to ensure successful integration with the jawbone. At Dr.Edward Doktorman in Clifton, NJ, our experienced dental team follows a systematic approach to deliver exceptional results and restore our patients’ smiles with dental implants.

The first step in the dental implant procedure is a thorough consultation with our dental team. During this visit, we will discuss your oral health history, evaluate the condition of your jawbone and surrounding teeth, and address any concerns or questions you may have. We will also take dental impressions, X-rays, or 3D CT scans to assess the bone structure and determine the optimal treatment plan for your dental implant procedure.

Once the treatment plan is established, the dental implant placement can begin. This is typically done under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. The dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the underlying jawbone. Then, a small hole is carefully drilled into the bone, and the dental implant fixture, typically made of titanium, is inserted into the prepared site. The implant is positioned at a precise angle and depth to provide optimal stability and support for the future dental restoration.

After the implant is placed, a process called osseointegration takes place. This is when the surrounding bone tissue fuses and integrates with the implant, creating a strong and stable foundation. It usually takes several months for the osseointegration process to complete, allowing the implant to become fully anchored in the jawbone. During this healing period, a temporary restoration may be placed to maintain aesthetics and functionality.

Once the implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone, the next step is the placement of the abutment and dental crown. The abutment is a connector piece that attaches to the implant and extends above the gumline. It acts as a support for the dental crown, which is the visible part of the dental implant restoration. The dental crown is custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural-looking result.

The final stage of the dental implant procedure involves the placement of the dental crown onto the abutment. The crown is carefully positioned and secured onto the abutment using dental cement or screws, depending on the specific case. Once the crown is in place, our dental team will check the fit, bite alignment, and aesthetics to ensure a comfortable and visually pleasing result.

Throughout the entire dental implant procedure, our team at Dr.Edward Doktorman will prioritize your comfort and provide any necessary aftercare instructions to promote proper healing and optimal results. We are committed to delivering exceptional care and helping you achieve a healthy, functional, and beautiful smile with dental implants.

Dental Implants Vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants stand out as a highly effective and long-lasting solution. However, it’s essential to compare them with other tooth replacement options to make an informed decision. Let’s explore the advantages of dental implants over other alternatives:

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace multiple missing teeth or a full arch of teeth. While dentures can restore functionality and aesthetics, they have certain drawbacks. Dentures may require adhesive for stability, and they can shift or slip during eating or speaking, causing discomfort and affecting confidence. On the other hand, dental implants are permanently fixed in the jawbone, providing superior stability and a more natural feel. Implants allow for a stronger bite force and eliminate concerns about denture slippage.

Dental bridges are another option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of one or more artificial teeth held in place by crowns attached to the adjacent natural teeth. While bridges can restore functionality and improve appearance, they require the preparation and alteration of healthy adjacent teeth. Additionally, bridges do not stimulate the jawbone like dental implants do, which can lead to bone loss over time. Dental implants, on the other hand, do not rely on neighboring teeth for support and help maintain jawbone health by providing the necessary stimulation.

Removable partial dentures are used to replace one or more missing teeth when there are still healthy natural teeth present. These dentures have clasps or hooks that attach to adjacent teeth for stability. However, removable partial dentures can be uncomfortable, and the clasps can put pressure on natural teeth, potentially causing damage. Dental implants, on the other hand, do not rely on adjacent teeth for support and offer a more comfortable and secure tooth replacement option.

Dental bonding and veneers are cosmetic options to enhance the appearance of teeth, particularly for minor chips, cracks, or discoloration. While these procedures can improve aesthetics, they do not replace missing teeth or restore functionality. Dental implants, on the other hand, provide a comprehensive solution by replacing the entire tooth structure, including the root, offering the ability to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. Titanium Implants, known for their durability and longevity, are commonly used in dental implant procedures to ensure a stable and long-lasting tooth replacement solution.

Oral Care After Dental Implants

To ensure the success of your dental implants, follow these essential care guidelines:

Gently brush around the implant sites with a soft-bristle toothbrush and use a non-alcoholic mouthwash. Floss daily, avoiding direct contact with the implants until your dentist advises otherwise.

Eat soft foods and refrain from chewing directly on the implant area for the first few weeks to promote proper healing.

Drink plenty of water and steer clear of hot or spicy foods that might irritate the implant sites.

Regular check-ups are important to monitor the healing process and ensure the implants are integrating well.

If you notice unusual pain, swelling, or other concerns, contact your implant dentist promptly.

Proper care and regular monitoring will help ensure the long-term success of your dental implants.

Doctor Edward Doktorman luckily for me, has been my Dentist of choice for so many years. I have done multiple implants, root canals, bone graft, new posts and crowns, deep cleaning, filling, recementing, and other dental procedures in this office, and never had any issues afterwards. Dr. Edward and his staff are also great people on the personal level, very accommodating, very friendly, nice, helpful, go out of their ways to make the patient feel comfortable, and always smiling and joking with patients to lessen the stress of being at the dentist office. The Doctor always takes X-rays much more often than other dentists do before and after procedures (at no add’l cost to the patient) to make sure his work is done perfectly and satisfactorily. He always takes his time to explain in details what the diagnosis is and what needs to be done in an easy to understand language. You are no doubt in good hands with Doktorman.

From phone, to door, to chair, back to the door, this was a very positive experience. I put off a root canal for way too long. Don’t do that, by the way. Anyway, I ended up with a very angry abscess, went to one of those online doctors for $65 and got antibiotics and a dental rinse, and as soon as the swelling was sufficiently down, I decided to just have the tooth yanked. Back molar, not going to miss it too much, a lot cheaper than even going to Los Algones Mexico for a root canal which honestly these days makes a lot more sense than having it done for the higher price (even when factoring in air fare and hotel for dental tourism to Mexico) here in the States. In any case, everyone, and I mean everyone at this office is so friendly and polite and professional and efficient. It just so happened, and I certainly can’t guarantee this nor could this dentist, but I ended up being charged slightly less than the estimate they gave me. Even had it been the top and of the estimate, it’s still would have been a good deal. I would add that I am not a fan of Novocaine at all, and have had dental work done before without the shot because the regular pain I can handle, but I’m a baby about the Novocaine shot. This time I didn’t want to mess around since I was having a tooth pulled, but the dentist gave a fantastic shot and the entire procedure he did an excellent job. The healing process has been going very well with the exception of a bit of sharp bone sticking out the inner side of my gum (according to Google, this is not abnormal after a tooth extraction) and attacking my tongue on that side. I let them know about this today which is a Monday. I’m not scheduled to be back to have the stitches out until Thursday, but they told me that they would fit me in tomorrow. So let’s review: everyone in that office is friendly, professional, responsive, accommodating and efficient, the pricing is very gentle, and the dentist himself Dr. Doktorman does excellent work. So if you’re anywhere in reasonable commute distance and in need of a dentist, this seems like a pretty obvious choice. Going to a dentist is not recreational, but seriously, you’re going to be happy with them here.

FAQs About Dental Implants

The process of getting dental implants varies from person to person and can take several months. After the implant is placed in the jawbone, osseointegration begins. This process, where the jawbone unites with the surface of the dental implant, can take from 3 to 6 months. Once osseointegration is complete, the artificial teeth are created and fitted to the post portion of the implant. The entire process can take from 5 to 8 months, depending on the individual and their healing process.

Most people who have received dental implants say that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia can be used during the surgery, and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction. After the dental implant, mild soreness can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen.

The cost of dental implants can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the number of teeth being replaced and the need for any preparatory procedures such as bone grafting. Generally, dental implants are more expensive than other methods of tooth replacement, but they provide a more permanent and natural-feeling solution. Many dental insurance policies now provide coverage for implant procedures, but coverage levels vary by plan.
